Overview

Metro ECSU offers regional workshops and customized services for a variety of formative assessment topics. Key questions that serve as a framework for all formative assessment:

  • What is it we want our students to learn?
  • How will we know if each student has learned it?
  • How will we respond when some of our students do not learn it?
  • How can we extend and enrich learning for students who have demonstrated proficiency?

Regional Workshops

Regional Workshops are designed to give teacher teams foundational knowledge of assessment for learning, and provide work time for teams to develop practical implementation strategies to take back to their schools.

Customized Services

Customized Services are designed to maximize the assessment processes and strategies that address site specific opportunities and barriers in implementing assessment for learning.

On-Site Instructional Coaching

On-site coaching services are available to extend and solidify learning following any professional development for formative assessment.

Formative Assessment Components

Needs Assessment

Areas of strengths and next steps are identified through a needs assessment focusing on the modules detailed below. School teams have the opportunity to select training modules based on identified needs.

Identifying and Writing Learning Targets

Identify and write essential learning targets in student -friendly language to engage teachers and students in assessing and monitoring learning.

Defining Assessment

Explore the users and uses of both formative and summative assessment, as well as the definitions, differences, key features to understand how both forms of assessment contribute to student achievement.

Designing Assessment

Use a 5 stage process to design, administer and revise assessments that accurately assess the identified learning targets, increase student engagement and reflect the appropriate achievement targets.

Assessment as Learning: Student Feedback and Engagement

Examine the characteristics and rationale for effective feedback and its role in motivating and supporting student learning. Create classroom conditions that support growth and identify appropriate circumstances for a variety of feedback types. Learn methods to engage student learning.

Common Scoring of Assessments

Use protocols for collaborative common scoring to accurately define learning target expectations, manage data and explore teaching and learning strategies with your teacher team.

Informed Instruction

Teams use information from formative assessment as a tool to provide additional instruction for students meeting and not meeting the learning targets. Continue to engage the students to define where they are going, where they are now and how to close the gap.

Cooperative Purchasing Services

A wide variety of products are available with our program, the Cooperative Purchasing Connection. Vendor contracts are established through a formal bid process conducted by Minnesota Service Cooperatives (MSC).

Metro ECSU Membership

Active membership in Metro ECSU is open to each public school district which has chosen to join the cooperative by paying the appropriate membership fees. With membership districts can participate and vote in the governance of the co-op.
